Yas Waterworld is a water park on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, about 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport and 50 minutes from Dubai. It opened in 2013 and is run by Miral, the company behind the island's other big attractions, including Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld Yas Island. The whole park is themed around an Emirati legend of a lost pearl, with villages and rides that nod to the region's pearl-diving history.

It's worth a look if you're planning a winter sun trip to the UAE with children, or a stopover with a day to fill. The park says it now has more than 70 rides, slides and experiences, from gentle splash areas for small children to big thrill rides. Tickets are sold on the park's own site in UAE dirhams, and you get e-tickets straight away. The online shop also sells extras such as private cabanas for four or six people and gift vouchers.

What's worth a look

These are the rides, tickets and experiences we'd look at first on the park's website.

The headline ride is Dawwama, which the park calls the world's largest six-person tornado water coaster: it starts with a drop from the top of the park's mountain and finishes by spinning through a 20-metre funnel. For something calmer, the Pearl Diving Experience lets over-8s dive into a tank to collect oysters, and you can have your pearl set into jewellery. The rides page has a height filter, so you can check what your children will be tall enough for before you go.

• Buying online saves up to 10% compared with the gate. The site gives the online single-day price as AED 295, against AED 305 to AED 325 at the ticket counters depending on the season.
• A 1 Day Any 2 Parks ticket, marked as a limited-time offer, saves up to AED 285 when you combine Yas Waterworld with Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World or SeaWorld Yas Island on the same day.
• Multi-park tickets cover two, three or four Yas Island parks over six days, with savings of up to AED 685.
• Children aged three and under go in free with their parents.

How to save more

• Book ahead online rather than at the gate, and pick your date carefully: VIP bookings are non-refundable, although standard tickets can usually be exchanged or have their date changed through Yas Concierge.
• If you're staying more than a day, compare a multi-park ticket against single-day tickets for each park. It often works out cheaper if you'll visit at least two parks.
• Use the free Yas Express buses from Dubai, Abu Dhabi city and other emirates instead of a taxi. You'll need to show a valid e-ticket.
