Newspapers.com is an online newspaper archive, part of Ancestry, that lets subscribers search and read scanned newspaper pages dating from 1690 to the present. The site describes itself as the largest online newspaper archive, with more than a billion pages from over 31,000 newspapers. Content covers news, sports, advertisements, obituaries, comics, and birth and marriage announcements.
It is popular with family historians, genealogists, students and journalists who want to find a relative's obituary, a local report from a particular day or the original coverage of a historic event. A Clippings tool lets you save and organise the articles you find, and gift subscriptions are available for relatives who enjoy digging into the past. The homepage promotes a seven-day free trial, and the main plan page lists the Publisher Extra subscription, which includes papers still under copyright.
British shoppers should know the site is American. Its region setting shows United States (English), and prices are in US dollars, with tax calculated at checkout. At the time of reading, the Publisher Extra plan was $19.90 a month or $74.90 every six months, converted by your card issuer at the rate of the day. Subscriptions renew automatically at list price, and the site asks you to cancel at least two days before the renewal date through Account Details or by contacting support. Most of the archive is US papers, so check coverage of UK titles before subscribing.
